I have the same ones every year un the same place. Huge. All I know is they blow up real good when ya hit em with the lawn mower lol.
Actually:Giant Puffballs, Calvatia gigantea

A giant of the mushroom world, this species can become so large as to be mistaken for a sheep lying in a field. Each puffball may contain billions of spores in a spongy mass with the texture of a marshmallow.

Them there "shrooms " are puff balls . They can be eaten , I have eaten them before , just have to be carefull as to when you eat them. They have to be all white inside and no discolouration at all . Slice them and fry them in some butter or butter with some seasoning in it......mmmmm yummy !!!

Here is a link with all the info on them and even a few recipes .......

Update,
I went shroom huntin this mornin and this is what I found (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms5.jpg).
From what I have read, they say don't eat a shroom with yellow inside, hey, no problem with that rule (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms6.jpg). I'm gonna cut em open and check out the rest. More to follow.

I'm not takin any chances on my first batch. I found some black under the skin (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms7.jpg), so I dumped them. These (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms8.jpg) are what I ended up with. I just talked to a buddy that cooked some up last night at his place. So it seems like I'll let them dry and decide how I want to cook em.
Maybe a mod might want to move this to the Mess hall section?
Looks like this might be a longer and different kinda post then I thought.

Thanks Rebel64, Now that we got it moved, now lets talk about atv riden a bit. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/icons/thhaha.gif

Well Boys, I had to let the shrooms dry (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms9.jpg), so Mr Freeze and I went to check the creek (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/9-17-1.jpg) out. Then, of course we had to take pictures of each other (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/9-17-2.jpg). It was a nice ride.

Well Boys, this is how I did em, the recipe I used is at the bottom. I started with slicin (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms-1.jpg) them up and then puttin them through this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms-2.jpg) production line, then I (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms-3.jpg), excuse me,, I meant,, then I (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms-4.jpg) did all the work to end up with these (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms-5.jpg). So I thought I would just sit down and enjoy them (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/2011/shrooms-6-1.jpg) and tell y'all about it. After I ate the first two, I got a lil dizzy, so I stopped eating and just kept cookin. The dizzy ness when away so I ate some more. Ya know Boys, these shrooms taste pretty dar good, I lik em. I think I will go and cook some more. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/hobbles/icons/hippie-1.jpg

Parmesan Puffballs

Serves 4 as an appetizer

Hope Miller is the coauthor of the book Mushrooms in Color . This is one of her favorite recipes.

1 teaspoon salt
1 cup flour
About 1 pound puffballs, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slices
1 egg, slightly beaten with 2 tablespoons water
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
4 tablespoons butter or more if needed
2 tablespoons oil or more if needed

Mix the salt with the flour. Dip the mushroom slices in the flour, then in the egg, and last, in the cheese. Melt the butter and oil in a sauté pan or skillet and sauté the mushrooms slowly until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve at once.

Hey no problem , after being a chef for 22 yrs it becomes second nature to answer these kind of questions .

Another great wild mushroom to look for in the spring is the "Morel" .it can be hard to find , but once you find them and fry them in some butter with fresh garlic, salt and pepper and slap them on top of a nice bbq'd rib eye or strip loin.....mmmmmmmm , you will be out picking them every year !!!!

Here is a pics of the "morel"

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_yYRLFFnb9Dk/S9xjZJSbzaI/AAAAAAAAAW8/uYSeCZhW_-w/s400/morel1.jpg

A tip when picking wild mushrooms , never just pull them out of the ground , cut the stem with a sharp knife around ground level . This makes sure that they will grow again in the same spot for many many years . It is kind of hard to do this with the Puffball mushrooms , but if you gently lift it with one hand, you should be able to slide a long sharp knife blade between the mushroom and ground.
