Hey guys,
the wife has a 97' fourtrax 300 2x and i just ordered my third rearend off ebay, i have had this sence 05 and have had no other issues...
Do you think something could be bent i the frame that would cause this?
Drive line issues?
One more question, if i get a 4x4 bottem end, could i convert this to a 4x4?
Let me know fellas?
Thanks, buck

Thats weird. I have a 97 Honda 300 all wheel drive and have had 0 problems.
I wonder what it could be. I would think you would need a different tranny to run 4x4. Wouldn't it need a front slot to run into if you put a front rear end in it?
I would think someone was bent or off angle for that to be happening. Do you get any vibration in your machine?

well, i know that i would need the parts to make it a 4x4.. but..??
As far as vibration or shimmies.. theres nothing..
The first time i rebuilt it was do to pull starting my huge ass brother in law..i just figured doing that a thousand times really put a grind on the rearend gear..
The second time i think was do to a bad bearing... and now this time...
By the way, everything always comes aprat and goes together nicely, doesnt show signs of being bent..??
Who knows..
Has anyone found the right to to tightin the jamb nut on the top of the rearend? it keeps the bearings and the little short shaft in place..(where the drive shaft goes in at.)
Thanks guys.

What exactly is happening to your rear end??
Shit, I can't believe I just asked that.

It has a kinda poping noise. i know that the teeth on either the worm gear or the main gear are hitting oneanother wrong so, its acting like the timing is off.. causeed by broken teeth on one of the gears..
And for the record, thanks for asking about my rearend...LOL
what are you using for oil? are you getting water in the oil? thats pretty weird those 300 rear ends are tough

Ofcourse im getting water in there!!! But i do service it after anykinda ride that would involve those issues...
Would a bearing higher up in the tranny area cause the shaft to spin outa shape and ruin the lower bearings?

Have you replaced an axle lately? Could be missing a tooth.
300's really don't have that tough of a rear end, especially the 2wd's, since all 300cc's are going to the rear two tires.
Also, when you slow down, how hard ot you gear down, because I know it can't have any brakes whatsoever. Gearing up and down aggressively can really decrease the longevity of any rear end.

Are you doing Hondas version of 'dumping the clutch' to get 'em spinning?
Do you feel any exess vibrations on hard surfaces?

No i dont dumb the clutch... but the slow down thing may be the culpret.. i will check the axel for issues in the am.
The guy i just spoke to owns a store on ebay, and he said that this model rearend is always an issue.

Must be different than the 4x4 model. We've been beating the living shit out of one since new in '99 and only changed out wheel bearings.

Ok, guys, took the thing apart today.. I can do in the dark with my toes ihave done it so many times..
pulled everything apart. The worm gear (short shaft) is missing all the teeth, and the spline gear shows signs of damage.. im reluctent to buy new gears or just buy a new rearend. The whole thing was full of water.. breaks, rearend, center tube had ice in it from sitting so long ( sence summer ).. oppinions

Sorry. couldn't resist.
lol here people are acting like they are an issue, from what I work on that is probably the least worked on honda atv in my shop, around here everyone had one in the day. :cheer2:

What do you suggest cd? rebuild or new?
whichever way is cheaper really, if your cases are still good along with a few other parts it may be cheaper to rebuild
Here someone is giving one away pretty cheap on ebay, new, mine are $669

i dont know what to do... How do you remove the insideout threaded nut that slides over the worm gear?
it takes a special tool, I have some of those things I can't remember which one that is but I imagine it looks like a 12 point socket looking in at the nut, and what I have done with those already is get a big nut that fits tight in the "socket" then get an old deepwell socket and weld to the nut, this actually works great, if i get a chance later I will snap a pic of the one I keep in my box.

this is one of those "special" tools, I have some other things for different brands but its hard to keep track of whats what when I might only use them a few times a year.

WOW, AWSOME.. Thanks man, Anyidea what size that nut might be? That way i dont have to walk the isle at lowes with the rear end in hand to find it....LOL
I hade to make my own tools to remove the Rear swing arm,i welded a bolt that fit the hexbolt head.. I broke that thing three or four times until i got it short enough that the shaft wouldnt twist..LOL.. its fun making tools. kinda rewarding
that nut measures 1 7/8", I know it fits honda front ends but I don't know if it fits the rears, i think, but not 100% sure. man I have so many tools I've built, I have one big drawer full of this stuff and its all got its place and I am the only one that know where that is lol. I build tools mainly because I work on such a variety that I may work on something that I may never work on again and its hard to justify spending $90 on a puller or something, sure if its something popular I own the tool.
