What is a pintle hitch? Found a trailer for sale and it has this comment:

If it's on the trailer, it may just be a round eyelet.

I'm surprised you don't know Mark... I thought pintles were all the military used. I prefer a ball, much quieter and gives a tighter feel to the package when getting on and off the brakes/throttle and turning. Pintles will also go way higher on the capacity rating but that don't matter with your half ton.

Rebel64
12-16-2011, 03:07 PM
You can tell that from the picture?

Yanno I had a vague feeling that this is what was used on a lot of trailers and stuff, but I was never had to tow the little pieces of equipment when I was in...only the 25 & 40' trailers, and 53' ISO containers.

So I guess I need to change the setup on my truck if I want to pick up this trailer?

Personally I wouldn't get a pintle set up. Like Ray said they are a sloppy feel to driving with them. Especially with a light load. They are made for heavy towing.

800Stealth
12-16-2011, 03:19 PM
You could take the pintle ring off the tounge of the trailer and put on a standard 2" ball coupler too. That would be cheaper than buying a draw plate and pintle for your truck. That wouldn't help get ya home with it though.

Rebel64

Yeah no kiddin. Seller is about 50 miles away, wonder if he will deliver?
Then how to mount the coupler assy? Pintle welded on? Jeez I just want a friggin trailer to we can ride over the holidays!

You can get one like this or

And its a dual setup!

I doubt it's welded on, should just be 4 bolts holding it on.

If your just looking to get something quick for the holidays rent a uhaul car trailer, they're only 15 bucks a day last time I rented one.

Rebel64

Before our summer quad trip to Missouri this summer I looked all over for a trailer to rent with no luck. They might have them now that it's winter, but still just want my own.

Ha! Sand delivery system was down so I left at 11. :)

stricker76
12-16-2011, 03:35 PM
Yeah, judging by the pic it should be bolted onto a plate, easy enough to change that.

Rebel64

But the coupler systems mount over a 2-3" channel. Looks like this thing just comes to a point and then the eyelet. Pixellated as hell when zooming in on the picture.

50 miles is far Mark? I drive over 30 to work for the last 24 years, lol.

I wouldn't use a pintle either if your only haulin a couple of quads, my $.02

Worst case, cut the frame at the Y and weld one of these on.

I don't have the cutting or welding tools though.

800Stealth
12-16-2011, 03:51 PM
Could be that he cut the tounge off and welded a flat bolt plate to the front, my eyes aren't good enough to tell from the pic. If that's the case then you'd be stuck getting the pintle style draw bar for your truck. But honestly I think you'd regret it once you've listened to and felt it rattle and bang constantly.

Yeah that front looks funky. No way I'm going to screw around with the existing system on it or change my truck over. Left a msg to the seller to call me.

Those are mobile home axles Mark, stay away from that trailer. The tires/wheels are not DOT approved and you could get a ticket pulling a trailer with those on it. Not to mention they are hard to find, don't last very long and are expensive.

Rebel64

Yeah damn good price, and thanks for the tip on the frame. Lots of salt used around this state. Wonder just how much TLC it needs.

12-19-2011, 06:07 PM
Good price...but I'd make sure what he means about needing a little "TLC" before making a trip and towing it home.It may not be roadworthy enough for the trip.

Ask about the dent in the right front, looks like it's rusted and most likely leaking water which means the floors are probably rotted.

Can't you put one in the bed and one on the trailer to get you buy for now anyways? I've done that a few times and full size truck beds don't get any smaller than a stepside Z71 like I have.

Hey not my fault. Well maybe a little bit. I guarantee she'll never forget to set the hand brake again though!

But just the thought of rolling those 29fives over the wheelwell humps and then stopping in time kinda freaks me out. If it was a little bike like she had last time that would be another story and I'd pick up some ramps.

Looks to be around 15" from the front of the wheelwell to the bed wall. Brushguard sticks out about 8" in front of the tire. Just enough room for a tire secured up front. I guess I'll look around for a pair of atv ramps.
