Well my guards are almost finished at last.
I hope to have them all bolted up over the long weekend & check them out for any spots that might rub & need some grinder TLC.

Im not using U bolts i built some custom brackets that fit over the arms & uses three 3/8 button head bolts up from the bottom to help with the ground clearance. I hope the brackets are strong enough. They should be i usually over kill everything i build. 1/8th steel for the guard & 1/4x1.5 bar for the brackets should be enough.

I hope to have pics up soon.

I would normally agree that you overkill everything, but hey, you posted pics of that plow, that didnt look like you used overkill on that bad boy 8)

Better watch those button heads if they are going in at the very bottom, the heads will get sooo mashed up on rocks and stuff that you will probably never get an allen wrench in there to take them off, you would likely have to grind the heads off of them???? Just a thought....

Funny you should mention the plow. It took every bit of willpower I had to not overkill the design & guess what happened. I broke it last winter. :x
I’m also not happy with the way the blade carries the snow when I lift it. It works more like a bucket.

I figured I would have to cut the bolts off or at least use some vise grips to get them off. I think i will use carriage bolts in place of the button heads so i will only need one wrench.

Got some pics of my guards tonight while i was testing for fit. I only have one small pinch point & its real easy to fix. :D

I will let you know
Let me test them first for a bit.

If i do start making sets of them i think i will have to go with U bolts because those clamps i built are a bugger to make & the price would just be too high.

Jay, call around to some stamping type shops, you might be able to get those clamps stamped out pretty cheap, and probably really fast if you pay to have the dies made by someone. What material is it, just flat bar or aluminum, either can probably be stamped out though.

Its all steel Rubberdown. 1/4" for the clamps & 1/8" for the guard.

I work in a stamping plant :D

If i actually get enough orders I will look into making some dies. But i will need two sets one for left & right side unless i change the clamp design.

Hmmmm Time to get the gears working again.

The other trick is getting the guards cut out on the laser or plasme cutter. My company REALLY does not like side projects to be built at work. I can contract a job with them. They will do that sometimes but not often. They also charge an arm & a leg.

Mine guards are set about 1"+ forward to clear the heavier axles & larger CVs but they will still fit a stock bike. I also had to cut my stock guards off to make room for the clamps.

Dont you work in a CNC shop?

I think i know a cheep way to have some dies made

After some thought tonight the form die will not be that hard to do.
As long as i can get the blanks cut to the right shape.
If I make it so it only forms one end of each clamp then only one die is needed but it will take 8 hits with the press to make all the clamps for one bike. That’s better than the 16 hits & 4 welds that mine took.

Well i got them all bolted up but i have to move them a bit as the will just touch the break disk if i turn at full turn lock. I hope i dont need to trim them to clear. Other than that they dont hit any other spots. I hope to test them out next weekend & have some feed back then.

Had them out for their first serious run this weekend with bmdjmd & a couple othe local boys.
The worked great & gave me no issues at all. The ony thing i might change is to add a couple of holes in the bottom tohelp clear the mud & crap that built up on it.

I had a 2" branch gome up & hit one guard. It sounded like a gong & scared the crap out of me because i forgot all about them being on the bike. Lets just say they work good as they are not bent at all & the branch broke in 3 peaces.
