OK,
Went on a 30 mile dice run yesterday. The guys riding with me said I was smokin blue. I checked the oil the night before and topped her off. She was down a little. Well tonight I'm about 1 quart low!!!! I checked a cleaned my foam filter prior to the ride and after. It looked OK. SO, now what could it be? I'm defintely burning oil. I;m not an engine man, but if it's something simple I'd rather not have to drag it to the dealer. Any thoughts?

It's a 2006 500 EFI X2 with 630 miles on it. I don't beat the crap out of it.

Be carefull and get it fixed ASAP. Probably best to take it to the stealer in my opinion.

My 2000 500 did that, it burned enough smoke one day to blow the motor, then the used motor burned enough oil to burn up the lifters or something, then I replaced those and got rid of it....

I saw another X-2 last weekend smoking enough to alert anyone else of a FOREST fire!!!!! I did not see him this weekend!!!!
Ofcourse he SAID he had "just changed his oil and THOUGHT it was OVERFULL"

Don't know, but he wasnt there today or yesterday with his riding buddies....

Dropped the X2 off to the dealer this afternoon. he could hear a little pinging, but he said he's heard a lot worse. They're going to run it through a couple of oil changes and check the oil for metal. he'd like to hold off with changing the piston head right away. Keep your finger's crossed. worse case scenerio is that they have to bore it out a little. I guess I'll have to deal with what comes. Cross your fingers!!!

dude, don't you know better than to let the smoke out of your machine? Once you let the smoke out, it stops working!! That's proof that it really runs on smoke.

LMFAO, heres what mine says whenever I go out without her, of if its a guys weekend away, this is usuallky the first thing out of her mouth when I call home...

So...wha'da break?

LOL, I shit you not, thats what she says :biggrin1:

Anyways, can or will the dealer do a leak down test to see where it might be bad? I have heard that a leak down test is supperior to a simple compression test.... I honestly dont know, but its just what one of the race nuts I know always tells me, and since he won at Pikes Peak 2 years ago and set a new mountain world record for quads, I tend to listen to this guy LOL...

Good luck and keep us posted on the damage$$$

Paul,
I'm glad I'm not the only poor married SAP that hears this!!! LOL Thanks for the info on the leak down test. Not being a motor guy, I had never heard of this before. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow to see if they've had a chance to even look at it yet. I'll ask them if this is a test that they can perform. Hey, just think, if they have to bore it out...that means MORE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:flame:

Not looking good boys. I called the dealer on Friday hoping to get some good news. BTW, this was while I was killing time waiting for the rollback to show up to tow me and my truck home!!! So I called the dealer (atv) and they told me they ran it through an oil change and found metal in the oil filter!!! They have 2 motors on the bench right now and once they're off the bench mine is going on. Looks like they'll bore it out and slap her back in. You guys have any thoughts or suggestions while I have this thing torn apart.

Find a good performance cam, port & polish heads, fuel injected maybe smooth out that throttle body... not sure if you can get high performance pistons for yours or not.

Well the Stealer finally got my engine on the bench...NOT good boys!!!:frusty: After they tore into it this is what they said they found. I need a new rod & piston. they are going to an overbore. But...they also said that my cam chain was stretched to the max!!! WTF!!! He said he's never seen one this bad!! So we're talking a new chain and gears too!!! He's not sure what caused this to happen. He said that the piston didn't look that bad, but it was best to bore and replace.

I've done regular fluid changes on this machine, Hell its only an '06 with less than 600 miles on it!!! (gotta remember I live in NY...no trails to ride). I don't beat the crap out of it more than anyone else!!! one more time...WTF!!!:frusty:

Of course I didn't get an extended warranty so this ones coming out of my pocket.

Anyone have an idea why my chain/gears would have gone to shit? Could it be because I switched to 27" tires? I think I would have burned up a belt first.

Any thoughts would help. I'm pissed!!

My thoughts are that sucks! I have no advice on the damage other than the 27" tires very likely are not the cause. Hope the bill isn't too much!!

OK boys and girls,
Well I finally was able to pick up the X2 from the stealer. Well it was just under $1500...but not by much. In talking with the mechanics, they really thought I probably got screwed by the last mechanic that worked on it. they said it almost looked like they used 10W-30 when the last oil change was done. Lesson learned hard this time!!! I will say now that it's over bored I think it's got a little more get up a go. They gave me all of the parts that they pulled. You should see how curled the teeth on the chain sprocket are...Holy shit!!!

I'm going to do my next oil change after 10 hours and then another after 15.

Back on the trails finally!!!!

interesting... blaming it on 10W30 is interesting too, even if it is a polaris their engines are built similar to yami, honda, etc. and they all do fine on 10w40 and the like. i say there was some type of shit in your oil and it lost its lubricity. just what, who knows or how it got their, if i had to guess...
