I still don't understand how it happened since I wasn't hammering the bike at all like I did a couple of weeks ago out here, but if you listen closely you can here it go right before I stop and look down to the rear right side.

Didn't look that bad at all. That's a little strange. Was it binded on a root or something?

Nope wasn't hangin up on anything...didn't even have it AWD.
Very strange for sure as to why it happened.
Gonna clean up the axle and debris that I dug out of the boot tonite, and will be shipping it back to Turner tomorrow. I'll take pics too.

What kind of warranty does Turner put on the axles Mark?
Is it covered, I can't remember how long you've had these?
Rebel64

1 year, but not sure of all the details of what he covers.
I haven't had them for over a year yet...sometime around the end of July I think.

Wow that's some carnage there man!
But the cup is totally intact as far as I can tell. I popped it out this afternoon, and started to clean up the goop.
The remaining pieces of the cage are soaking in a can of solvent, and only recovered 4 of the balls. Huge gash on the boot too.

Same happened to me, doing the "slow roll" always and this is what happened

Damn Mark....seems some of us can't get a friggin break man!
I'm in tune to when the handlebar starts it's grabbing while just rolling along.... and that is a sure sign that the boot has been torn and all the grease is washed out and failure is a sure thing....
You say the boot was ripped ...right? Could have happend a while ago and the grease finally was replaced by mud/dirt and was galling the balls to the cup....Did you hear any clicking---the sound made when the cage is cracked---causing the cage to actually seperate when under load from rotation. It is usually not long after that the cup will no longer take the stress and will burst.
I hope Turner will be there for ya!
"IF" they claim a ripped boot was the cause...most warrantys are exempt from torn boots.
good luck bro!

I'm guessing the torn boot was caused by pieces of the cage.

No clicking was happening prior to this. I checked the bike out real good after we rode in the same place 2 weeks ago and all was 5X5.
When I was fishing pieces of the cage out of the boot it was just hot grease in there...no mud or water at all. I think the inner part of the axle was already out of the pit when it blew, and the boot got ripped right away, or when Steve pulled me back to the trailer.
I hope Turner takes care of it too. I'm going to call him today.

All I have to do is send the inner cup back to Turner and he's going to rebuild it using an upgraded star.
Rubberdown
06-17-2008, 07:20 PM
so what if the inner cup is marked up due to the sharp busted pieces rolling around in there, then that marked up cup will surely damage any new bearings prematurely!!!
Rebel64
06-17-2008, 07:24 PM
Well I'm sure he would take note if there's any damage to it, and take care of that also.

The last one I busted up, I stipped the splines on the shaft.
Man I love this new motor. LOL
Good luck. Hope you're rolling soon.

Yeah I got back out there and cleaned up the splines and they are definitely ragged out. Looks like this will be more than just sending the cup back to him.

WOWZERS!.......That 800 of yours is one strong sumbitch!
Seriously, You posted earlier Turner was going to rebuild the cup with a "different" spider ?????
So does Turner have varying levels of "custom" axles
Rebel64
06-18-2008, 09:19 AM
I don't know if the upgraded star is a new thing of his or not, but that's what Tonya said he was going to put in the cup.
But now with the splines being geeked, I'm wondering if I'll get a whole new axle assy out of this.
I'll step outside at some point here at work and give him a call.

07-02-2008, 06:17 PM
Rebuilt axle will be back here tomorrow, and not a dime was charged to me.
Daniel said I'd break a prop shaft before having this problem again thanks to his new stuff.

07-02-2008, 06:28 PM
Great news!! Well, at least 'till you blow the prop shaft! LOL

LOL yeah I got a chuckle out of that when he told me that could be my next upgrade out of his shop if that happened.

then you could spin the low gear on the shaft. Ahhhh good times.
Rebel64
07-02-2008, 07:12 PM
And then weld the beotch up solid! (and then pursue the gear reduction)
Ah yes...fun times fo sho! They never end, do they?

I was on there site last night (due to some desperation with my situation :( ) and I didnt see a price list for their heavy duty axles. Do I have to call them to get a price?
Rebel64
07-02-2008, 10:03 PM
Yeah his site isn't the best, so yes give him a call and if he has the time be prepared to have your ear talked off. He's a great guy.

It does not matter if you go there in person or talk on the phone with Daniel. The fact is he WILL talk your ear off.
