Well, I'm going to change out the Helix on my 800 and put in the 650 Helix, and try playing with the weights some.. For now I got the six outty weights and three Renegade weights.. I'm going to try it with the stock outty weights first and if revinng too low will change out to 3 outty and 3 rene weights.. Or to 2 rene and 4 outty or whichever setup works best for me...
Not only to help with belt life, but will maybe gain in the mid range and some in the low end.. Doesn't effect the top end..
From the reviews I've read the gains show up more with MORE load on it.. etc., bigger heavier tires, thick mud so on.. I think it might help with mine just for the places I ride, and even though my 27's aren't TOO big, they are heavier and so are the bighorns that go on it..
Most of them with stock tires haven't reported much of a gain..
So, the lighter the load the less you notice any kind of gain.. BUT if it helps with belt life/slippage then it's worth it to me. Especially with the high dollar OEM belts.. You wont find one at the dealer for much less than 169-175!!
I'm ordering my OEM belts from Parker Yamaha for 146 shipped to my door.. Cheapest place I have found...

The 650 Helix is around $40 from the dealer..
Now the rene weights are only sold in a set of 6, but I found someone with the other 3 after he did the mod for a very good price.. All six are around 200...
I may end up with a dalton clutch kit for it just for more tunability, but I am hoping I will be good with the weights I got...
Here is some more info on the subject on another site..

Helix Mod Testing (http://aurorawheelers.com/forum5/11569.html)

There is ALOT of reading to do in there on this subject!!! lol
It started out with a guy milling the 800 helix... Which really took it to a stock 650 pretty much....

so, I got the helix in, (easy job by the way) and tried it with the stock weights first.... Then tried it with the 3 rene weights....
Stock weights were better, pulled harder, the helix seemed to give it more "pull" about mid range, some in low...
Top end was not affected good or bad in it....
So, I am gonna take out the rene weifghts and go back to stock weights until I get the dalton weights....
I got pics I need to upload of most of the process, and weight changes.... Didn't take too many of changing the helix, but it is right behind the secondary... That spring behind there is pretty stout, really need two people to put it on or be very flexible and use feet to push it on and then turn the bolt!! lol

will get pics up soon of it, and do a little write up too.

How much of a difference are we talking? and what were the prices and where did you get them from?

torkmonster

the helix was from my local dealer.. around $50 for it... They list is as a CAM, or as the guy there pronounced it "CAME".... lol he didnt know what the heck I was talking about when I said I need a HELIX for a 650 outlander!!! LOL it is RED and is ONE piece unlike the older TWO piece ones, do NOT buy the two piece, as they have been prone to breakage...
It's kinda hard to tell man like as far as numbers on how much a difference it makes.... It is noticable more when more LOAD is put on it, ie tire size, weight, terrain, things like that... Gives it more belt "PINCH" also, though not at the beginning of clutch operation... Like I just said, it happens when more load is put on it...
I am thinking for ME as it may vary between people but me I think I am going to go with dalton weights, and get maybe a different sec spring, fopr a little more engagement and belt "GRAB" since the spring will grab it better early on.....

The 3 renegade weights I got from a guy on aurorawheelers.....
Not decided what I want to do with them yet really.... They are around 3 grams lighter each I think.....

OK BACK TO TOPIC
This is for the WEIGHT CHANGES

I've got a couple photo's loaded of the clutch off... I used a impact to get it off..

Carefully slide these two pieces apart
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc57/ab_towboat/08%20800%20Outty%20Clutch/1102081650a.jpg
On this one there are bushings (?) on each side that will fall out...
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc57/ab_towboat/08%20800%20Outty%20Clutch/1102081650b.jpg
Ok, pick one and take weights OUT, depending on which setup you are going to use, or which weights you have, there is six in there so, mine was a 3 outty and 3 renegade combo... I'm going to try the 4 outty and 2 renegade next, as I wasn't happy with it with MY setup and the 3 and 3....
Taking out....

And Putting in.....

Now, I've got a couple more pics I gotta get on here, AND I didn't take as many pics of the helix swap as it was getting late and was trying to get it done....
I will get more of them soon, but there isn't anything to it but to take off the secondary, pull spring off and right there is your helix.. Make sure the helix is properly lined up before tightening down the secondary bolt again...... That's it....
Write more later on it and have the helix pics soon...

"Bankrupt"

Do you do any secondary spring changes? Or just the helix?

torkmonster
11-05-2008, 02:47 PM
I did just the Helix... For now... As well as most others did... You dont have to or really even NEED to change the spring out.
I'm going to see what happens upon further testing of it, when I actually get a chance to...
I wasn't happy with the weight change I did so far, and may end up with the Dalton kit for that, and go from there....
I am thinking on changing the secondary spring up though, but mainly for even more belt grab, and for even more low end.. Most of the helix changes is in the upper LOWs and alot in the MID range..... And it really shines when under a load..

So I got the Dalton kit ordered.... I will be home the 3rd to install it and play with the weights some... The Renegade weights just brought my RPM's up a lil too high for the size tires I got... Or atleast in my opinion...... Seemed to go out of the sweet spot of power as I like to call it.....
The green/yellow striped Spring comes with the kit.. I was hoping to be able to trade out for the TAN spring for a lil smoother engagement, but I will try this one and if do not like it will get the TAN one.....

torkmonster
12-04-2008, 09:43 AM
Put the Dalton kit in with the set up TWO per instructions enclosed with kit.... With the Aluminum RIVETS in... AND the Green spring also included with the kit...
I must say WOW what a difference... I only had a chance to test on the road up and back but MAJOR improvement from stock and I DEFINANTLY like the Dalton compared to the rene weights...
The curvature is different on these Dalton levers....... wheelie at 25 MPH and rode out to 36 MPH... lol And i definantly like the faster jump that comes along with the green spring.....

Arron, Is this a "have to" mod? i was looking into the 800, but i dont wanna mess with this stuff off the bat.. If i have to do this to be happy after adding a lift and bigger tire i will knock Can-am off my list.. Thanks Bro

torkmonster
03-02-2009, 12:14 PM
It is not a "HAVE-TO" per se...

It helps, just like the popo and the HeelClicker with bigger tires...

I have buddies with 29.5 outlaws, and 2" lift, and runs stock clutch.. Honestly, with bigger tires, you dont even NEED the clutch kit. I would advise atleast a spring change if you get REAL big tires, though, it all depends on your riding style and how you treat the throttle and which gear your in.....

I did it, mainly for the more belt grip and more belt PINCH... One thing on these can am's, there is ALOT of power there, and the OEM belts are high dollar... 146 shipped to my door is the cheapest I found out of Parker Yamaha.....
The Helix mod, is NOT by any means a have to thing.....
ANY quad can benefit from a clutch kit though..... And if your gonna clutch it, get the DALTON kit....
The EPI is good, but it is only springs, and the Dalton is spring and weights that are SORTA adjustable, like the HC, but these are rivits, so........ Once you put them in, they gotta be drilled out cause you gotta press them in......
Its realy all i how you wanna ride, and tire size mainly.....
I remember you like the big tires!! lol
If you like the Brute's, you'll LOVE the outty..... Or rene which ever you are looking at....
They are fun as hell, and race ready from the manufacturer...

thanks Arron, Ill leave it open as a option then
