Just wondering if anyone is running the timing advance key on their 600-800 sportsmans?
Im looking at getting a .03 advance key but want a bit more info before i jump in & get it.

Okay, so I've seen the titles of a few threads lately here and there about this option, what is the advantage of it, what does the key look like, how much does it cost and what sportsmans is it an option on?

Thanks guys.

Well advancing the timing makes our lawnmowers tourqe up quicker so i think it would do the same to four wheelers....Basically what it does it makes the sparkplug fire at a differnt time...

Thats just about it.
Makes a bit more power & you get a bit more jump off the line.
Sorry Paul but its only for the twins. 600-800 popo
Any Arctic Cat sled dealer can get them. I think yo can order them your self from Black Magic Racing.

I looks like a small woodruf key but with a small flat on the bottom & has a .03 offset to one side.
I will try to get a pic tonight

They are $15 US or $40 from the sled dealer in Novar Ontario.

paul, its a .50 part.

looks like a keyway for a shaft pulley. but if i remember correctly that guy on HL said it didnt do a single thing for him. he said the biggest (and just about the only) thing that made a difference for him was milling 80 thousands off his head to raise the compression.

Well we take the flywheel to a machine shop let him shave it some then advance the timing...If it is anything like a lawmower motor it makes a differnce...Not a big differnce but when you do all the lil things it helps...

Yep my key is in but my bike still is not running right due to a unknown problem. I only have
a .015 key not the .03 i ordered. I got the wrong one & it was not worth the trouble to send it back so i put the 1.5 deg. key in.

Holy crap that sounds like greek to me, but hope you get the prob resolved.
Anybody else done this on their popos with good results?

Yeah they do Stroker. Lookin to add one to your 700?

Yeah they do work I got one on my 700 its a .5 degree advance and like everyone said it revs a bit faster and might have a little more jump "out of the hole".
Me I'm not looking for a whole lot of speed, i just like the low end torque.. Who needs really to go more than the 70+ that the thing will already do?
Anyway to not be long winded I liked mine but for me I wouldn't get one smaller than the .5...
I have seen some people that take their FLYWHEEL out and seperate it then turn it a SLIGHT DEGREE then put it back and in and there's your ADVANCE... Although I've not done it and probably wont attempt it myself

Wont a programmer do a timing advance on an EFI bike?

I'm going with the programmer also. Don't really feel like tearing into the guts more than I need to at this time, especially with the current projects happening.

I installes the .050 in my 600 and noticed that it revved faster and got to the top end quicker. It only took 20-30 min to install. With all the other mods I have done to my bike it helps a little bit more. I think it does have more "seat of the pants" feel to it. The first time I really got on the gas after installing it I lifted the front end off the graound and carried it into the mud pit. I was totally shocked.

Wow Kirk, you sure dug up an old thread!
I wonder how much more kick that'll give to my 800? Not that it really needs it, nor does my throttle thumb...but just curious.

It is not a mod to do all by itself and expect to notice a big gain..

Now with a few others combined it DOES make a difference..... Certainly revs quicker and seems like already said, to gain a little low end.... Not sure if you could actually get numbers difference but the seat of the pants is there....

To clarify some things, these degree keys have been around on a long time and provided you have the right size can be installed on anything, something like a 400 two stroke for 400/500 fourstroke polaris has an adjustable timing plate so you can actually retard/advance with that. all the key does is adjust timing, just like when you twisted the distributor on your pickup back in the day. most of your EFI modules (programmer) strictly adjust fuel, this is theoretically the same as jetting your carburetor, but on an EFI its all electronic. There are other modules out there that timing advance, rev limits, etc. The EFI programmer's purpose is to offset changes made to air flow, internal performance modifications, exhaust, intake, etc. the factory system really can only adjust for temperature changes and not drastic changes. Some atv's respond very well to the degree key, some don't, if you had pretty optimum timing to start with, you can hardly improve upon it. you MAY pick up some heat doing this as well. but if you want to get picky and know what timing does, get out the old strobe light and play.
