External Air Filter

Has anyone ever used external air filter instead of snorkle on BF? Can i just cut a hole in Air box and mount say a Harley K & N filter housing on pvc pipe about 4 ins above airbox? That would look tons better than a snorkle but would it work without the stock filter?
