I am thinking about getting rid of the stockers and going with a 10" tire up front . I ride a Sportsman450 with 8" tires up front , so what size spacer do I need to clear a 10" tire , 1" , 1.5" , 2" ? Also do I need spacers in the rear , or not ?

Some 10" tires will clear on aftermarket wheels. Others you will need a 1" spacer. All depends on the tire side lug and wheel set up

My 26x10 mudlits needed a 1" spacer on my 04 600. ITP rims also have a 1" off set from stock so they will also work. Thats what i run now with no spacers.

It was my intention to use the stock rims front 12x7 , rear 12x8 , no offset that I am aware of . Cost being an issue of course .

my '06 800 needed a 1 inch spacer up front when I went to a 27 x 9 R 12.

i needed a 1" spacer up front with my 28x10 bugs. i also needed spacers in the rear because the side lug of my bugs would hit the sway bar.
Whats the smallest spacer that can be made.Is it possible to make 1/2 inch spacers ??

i dont think so because the nuts ans stock studs would be to long and would stick past the spacer.

I talked to RD about some thinner spacers awhile ago and they can't get much thinner. Could maybe make one abot 3/4 but whats a 1/4 difference going to make?

Not a whole heck of a lot.

you just have to watch out of you try and just use some washers or thin spacers on the stock studs. i had a wheel and tire shop do that on my explorer because they didnt want to order the correct wheels and wanted to cut cost by using what they had in overstock.
well a change of shorts, new fender, wheel and tire and a paint job later they spent about 2400.00 to replace what they could have done right for a extra 200.00
the washers on the rims spaced the wheels about 1/2" out which in turn gives you 1/2" less threads for the lug nuts to grab on. but it seems that the brilliant minds at that shop didnt factor that in. so all the lug nuts were only being held on by about 3-4 threads. going down the road they started falling off 1 tire.... it wasnt pretty. just thank goodness for me it was a back tire.
and i can only imagine if it did that on a street vehicle with minimum wear and tear vs a atv that gets a hell of alot more abuse.

Cant imagine losing a tire while driving, never has happened to me and hope it never does. The thought of losing a front tire while driving...wouldnt be pretty no matter what your driving.

Well I decided on 27" Mudbugs 10" front and 12" in the rear , with stock rims listed above , what size spacer up front , and will I need spacer in the rear . If anyone got pics of these tires mounted with or without spacers , posted pics would be nice so I could see the clearance from the tie rods .
Now will I need a lift to clear these tires ? I will eventually get one , but can't get it all at once ..........

you need 1" spacers in front. i needed spacers in the rear because the side lug of the bugs would hit the sway bar. you can use 1" on the rear. but i went with 1.5" just so the front and the rear tires stuck out the same width. you might be able to get away without spacers. it could just be from the lift that the bugs hit sinse with the lift it brings the hub closer to the sway bar. i like the way i have the spacers though because it gives the bike a nice wide stance while still being high. alot of times it keeps me out of ruts of other smaller bikes.
here is some pics of my 28" bugs. 10 in the front and 12 rear.

I've been reading at http://atvquadsquad.com/eve/forums about flipping the tie rods to avoid spacers. Might give it a shot to see if it works. Would be nice to get rid of my spacers all together.
You can search on "flipping tie rods" to find out info. Anyone here tried this? Any issues?

Hey popo500efi those Bugs look deadly , nice set up . I didn't realize with the lift that the back tires would move in that close to the sway bar .
Just a couple of questions if you don't mind seeing you have the set up I am looking for .... How do you find the Bugs for trail riding , snow , etc.... ? Do they wear as good as what is said in the forums ? Did you notice a power loss going with 28" ? Top speed is what I am not about but I want to be able to spin them when it is called for . Last question I think how much ground clearance now . Anything else you can think of will be appreciated .Thanks

they trail ride pretty good. on the hard packed stuff they are a little shaky at about 20km/h. i have only riden them on the street in the snow and they did good. in 2wd drive on ice they would slip but not as much as stock tires, but in the fluffy stuff they really grab. i find they were better then people say. the rubber is pretty soft. after about 500 km on them the edges of the lugs are a little rounded and i ride alot of gravel to get to the trails. you can spin them no problem. in reverse the bike bogges down in the thick stuff but if you have proper throttle control you can get them to spin without burning the belt.
what about using the longer wheel studs the the 800 uses one the aluminum rims with a 1/4 spacer would that work?
my tires are just barely touchingthe tie rod ends.

i would not recomend doing that. that will cause alot of stress on the studs. they dont make a spacer that small so you would have to use washers. the only real way to go is with 1" spacer.

Welcome yogi, I used a washer on my machine for a long time, but only a single washer and that was fine, but like stated above me, I wouldnt use too many. If you wanted to space it like you are saying, I would have a full ring made up with the bolt pattern in it like a wheel spacer but only one set of holes to go on your studs, but like you said, get the longer studs. This way, it will have the support just like a real spacer between the wheel and the hub.
