My friend borrowed a 97 500 Sportsman this weekend as it ran fine all day, after washing it in a river and bringing it home he heard a clicking noise from the rear of the transmission at slow speed - he brought it over and I checked the transmission fluid -FULL OF WATER - strawberrry milkshake - I tried flushing it several times and adding fresh fluid - noise still there - looks like I am gonna be pulling this thing apart to repair it for my friend, any ideas on what may be causing the noise - bearing?chain? Any ideas guys.

Are you guys positive its in the tranny and not a rear CV clicking, mine did that for a while once. If it is in the tranny, good luck, thats a beast I'd rather not split and get into, but I hate little parts and stuff, I'd end up throwing things across the garage

I took a longer look at the thing - as it is moving backwards with my hands on the rear axle shafts I can feel snapping in the left shaft and just some resonance noise in the right rear - so I removed the left axle and tried to find some play in it - but could not feel any so it is either only clicking under load or what I don't know - I repacked the wheel bearing and it seemed to be fine so I am leaning towards the c/v shaft - any one else have this problem??

500blue I have had that exact noise you describe it was a torn cv boot, dirt and whatever else gets in the cv joint and it'll make all kinds of noise. If you haven't already check all the boots for tears or holes.
