Nice to see ya still kicking Brad... gade hasnt got ya yet ???
I had a can-am in my garage for a few months.I was letting my cousin keep there because he needed a secure place to park it.It was a 2006 Outlander 800 V Twin EFI.I took it out a few times for a spin and I was blown away by the performance of the machine. No I wasnt blown away enough to crossover from the polaris side but it left me wanting something bigger than my sportsman 500.

speed they have....
its durability in the frame and a half ass locking front diff they dont have.
in their commercials they says industry leading power and torque.. but they mention nothing about durable frame and how much of a POS their visco lock is.
I'm eyeing the 08 sportsman 800 HO.
My cousin had a lot of problems with his visco lock but I think it was because he was running 29" outlaws.I had heard about visco lock problems on the 06 can-ams when running tires over 27".That and the exploding clutch helix and his rearend seal also blew out as well.
2X4MAN

I had an 06 800 with 27" Laws. The visco lok did fine on it as long as you hold the throttle steady. If you ever let off the throttle and get back in it the visco lok takes about three revolutions to engage again. It did take a little longer for it to engage with 29.5 on it than with 27s though. And like was said before the power was great!!!:bolt:

LMAO...... Yea, you go ahead and think that. Can Am is FAR from the best, hell, all of them are far from being the best. Now if we could take one or two things from each manufacture and put them all together in one bike, THEN we may have the best.
Ask Polaris700 how many Can Am's won at the last mud bog we were at and ask him how many Polaris's won in the same mud bog. He even has one of his favorite pics I'm sure he'll post up here for ya.

I would personally put my 2004 500HO sportsman against any machine of the same size with the same or similar mods in a mud bog race, or just playing in the water or mud. But thats just me. I do know that theres no way I could beat a machine with a 6" + lift or a big bore motor or anything else extreme but i wouldnt shy away from ANY machine in the same class ever. But again, thats just my opinion, and we are all entitled to one, so please, lets all play nice okay ;)
I will also say this, I rode that Renegade 800 this summer, what a powerfull SOB, but still, I'd rather ride my machine, i have grown to like my heavy tank of a 500 sportsman....

Live For, I promise, I am taking it easy. And YES, I DID say the most recent mud bog where all the big high dollar factory sponsored bikes were at, that includes the Gorilla Can Ams and the High Lifter Polaris bikes, and NO, Can Am didn't fair too well. I think they only won one race out of ALL the bogs. This was the first bog I had seen the Can Ams race at and I was highly disappointed in their showing, especially with all the big dollar teams that were there. There were guys there that had $17,000 bucks tied up in their Can Ams and man oh man they left the line like a fricking rocket but once they got in the water, the Polaris walked the dog on them. I'm sorry to say it, but on THAT particular day of the week, Polaris was WAY better than Can Am.
And RD, I AM playing nice, lol, lol.

Dirtbmw20
12-03-2007, 05:31 PM
Yea, the bog was at Doles. And YES, there was a guy there that had $17,000 tied up in his Can Am, I liked to fell out when he told me that. He goes by GreenHead on the HL forums. He has CRAZY money tied up in that thing. I just really expected Can Am to do much better than they did that day. I still couldn't believe the power those things had coming off the line but after that they just didn't do much.
Man, he had the frame stretched an extra 6 inches, of course a huge Gorilla lift (not no puny 6" lift) and TONS of motor mods along with nitrous and I'm sure alot of other stuff we don't know about. He use to own a HUGE Arctic Cat but sold that to buy his Can Am. And the bad part about the whole thing is they were running them 3 per race and he came in LAST in his race.
I'm a big fan of four wheelers man, I don't really have a personal preference so to speak, I like them ALL. The only reason a Polaris is my personal preference right now is because that's what I make payments on,lol, lol. I can say that the Polaris HAS been good to me and this is my very first Polaris but I think if I had to do it over again, AND KNOW WHAT I KNOW NOW, I would probally get me a Brute or a bigger Polaris.

What kind of cooler for the front rack are you talking about ???
As far as cost for snorkeling, you can usually snorkel a bike for anywhere from $30.00 to $50.00 bucks, it don't cost much at all to do it.

Dirtbmw20
12-03-2007, 07:55 PM
Oooooh OK, you're talking about relocating the radiator. I thought you were talking about a "beverage" cooler. All that is, is the factory radiators relocated up to the front rack. I also build the brackets to relocate them too but I have never even seen a Can Am radiator so that would all be new to me. Here are two more BETTER pics of the wife's bike. I personally did her radiator and her snorkels all by myself. The photos are of her in the mud bog at Doles last month, photos are compliments of Polaris700.

Relocating the radiator would be the most time consuming thing, as far as snorkels go, we could do the snorkel job in a day.

Dirtbmw20
12-03-2007, 08:10 PM
$200.00 would be a high figure, I would think it could be done for alot less. It usually takes about $30.00 in materials (metal) to build a radiator frame then you'll have to buy a few hoses to extend them up to the front rack. It cost me about $50.00 bucks to relocate my radiators on each of my bikes then about another $30.00 - $50.00 to buy the snorkel fittings and spa hose. I work one weekend out of the month (THIS weekend just happens to be my weekend to work too), other than that, I am off and free on the weekends so I could help you whenever you wanted to.

As for the Mud Bogs you guys are talking about I think the operators of the machines have alot to do with winning or not. I know a good bike is a BIG plus BUT the operator has to know how to ride also.:D
Dirtbmw20
12-03-2007, 08:31 PM
Alright, let me clarify a few things. First, I don't work on other peoples quads in my spare time, I barely have spare time to work on my own. Second, I said I would HELP you, that means you work on the bike with me, not me by myself. Third, completing ALL that in one day is not very likely, you are talking about a weekend project, not a day project. Hell, it takes the better part of a day just to build a radiator bracket, ESPECIALLY on a bike that I'm not familiar with and have never worked on before. AND, if I had to do it all by myself, then it would cost more than $200.00 for the whole project, the cost figure I gave you was with you HELPING with the project doing the "majority" of the work. There's no way I would do all that work all by myself for only $200.00. I was just trying to lend you a hand and help, not do the project by myself. I have two bikes of my own that I have to work on and right now as we speak, my bike is down in the shop and not driveable because I need a radiator frame for mine too. I am re-doing my snorkels all over just like I did my wife's so therefore I have to build ME another radiator frame. The one that WAS on my bike is now taken off and is being sold to Popo500efi so I have to completely re-do my own bike so I already have a major project sitting in my garage right now as we speak.
And now for my fourth and final question...... What in the world are your parents gonna do when you come back home with your bike all cut up into pieces and stacks sticking up everywhere ??? I know my dad would kick my ass if I did that to something he bought me.

You are very correct, but there were some VERY experienced riders on the two main bikes I am referring to. Anybody that is gonna sink $17,000 grand in a bike is gonna have some experience, you don't just drop that kind of money on a bog bike if you have no experience.

Hey.... a pissed off mom can be worse than a pissed off dad. I wouldn't have dared do something like this to one of my bikes when I was a kid or teenager, my parents would have put a foot in my ass but now that I'm 38, I can do stupid stuff like this and not get into any trouble. AND.... I never said I knew what I was doing, lol, I'm just a mechanically inclined person that likes to work on stuff. A Can Am will be all new territory to me, it will be like starting over from scratch.
As far as your jetting question, like I said a Can Am is all new to me but you shouldn't have to re-jet just because you snorkel the bike. The goal is not to bring more air into the engine, it is just to seal everything so it is water tight. Once it is all said and done, it should "breath" just like it did when it was stock.

That's why I bought a 09. The frames are damn near bullet proof now, the visco lock is much improved and is even better on the 2010 models (but my 09 is really good, not quite as good as the Polaris IMO but it's by far well above everything else)

the frames haven't changed. the visco does lock quicker on the '09's, but the power steering models it is instant. the visco on the PS models i would put ahead of the polaris system, and thankfully it is something that can be upgraded on the older models. course i'm waiting to see how the newer QE diffs handle huge tires first. one of the reasons can-ams don't hardly ever break front axles is because of the visco system acting as a dampener to shock loads. i'm worried that the faster locking could mean more axle trouble.

I think your right. I have been paying attention to the XMR's with respect to the axles, and apparently they keep breaking. I was talking to a guy on the trail 2 weeks ago who was telling me he seen an XMR's front diff housing break. The collar that holds the bearing and seal busted off leaving a big hole. The XMR has the QE with 30" tires.

Uh,....for the record I kick the livin' SH*T outta my X mr EVERY weekend (1200kms since mid October) and only ever broke 1 axle that was strictly due to MY inability to have proper control of my thumb in a precarious situation. The vast majority of broken axles on these machines are done in REVERSE!! I have yet to complain about the Q.E with my 30's, but who knows what's to come.

I'm not ripping on them. I ride a 2011 Renegade X xc and it's awesome. I couldn't be happier with mine. Although, Snow City is ordering new rear axles for it. They're telling me the CV's need to be replaced. I'm a bit concerned as the machine only has 60hrs and about 200 km's on it and there not hard km's either.
