W5 – Canada’s #1 current affairs program – returns to CTV with a new season, a new look, new logo and for the first time ever is broadcast in stunning High Definition. In the season premiere on Saturday, October 24 at 7 p.m. ET (visit CTV.ca for local listings) reporter Paula Todd turns the high beams on All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs).
With more than 100 Canadian deaths in 2009 alone, W5 discovers virtually non-existent safety regulations in Canada that may leave drivers of the popular off-road vehicles at risk of injury and death. W5 puts several ATVs to the test in an effort to determine just how prone they are to tipping.
While almost a million Canadians own an ATV, the public is generally unaware of the dangers associated with these recreational vehicles. W5 has uncovered mounting evidence that these powerful, heavy machines are more dangerous than most people realize and that little is being done by either government or ATV manufactures to increase safety standards.
In Alberta, where ATV injuries and fatalities are on the rise, W5 interviews Alberta Transportation Minister Luke Ouellette. In 2002, Ouellette promised to create a new ATV safety law, which was to include new helmet requirements and a minimum age for riders. To date, no ATV safety act has been drafted or passed despite the increase in preventable injuries and deaths.
On the opposite side of the debate are those who say it’s the ATV rider’s skill level and blatant disregard for safety that are to blame for the high accident rate, not the safety standards that are set by the ATV’s industry.
Todd seeks answers to why the federal government has done little to create standards for ATVs from federal Transport Minister John Baird

Always tryin to blame someone else! Here' an idea....take some resonsibility for your own stupidity! Like the manufactures built these things to kill people or get hurt! Pieces me off when some loser sues someone for there assinine actions! Just F@#$s it up for everyone! If your one of those dicks, "TAKE THE BUS!" But I'm sure you'll find a way to do something stupid and get hurt or killed! When the stunned ones do kill them selves, it ends the jean pool. They can't pass on there smarts to there off spring.
Wow, I feel so much better, lol.

You know the Federal Government should put laws in place against these investigative reporters to do a two sided full story and not one sided fuckin bullshit. They kept talking about Alberta which for one has no helmet laws common sense says protect your mellon. HMMM thats a federal law not a manufactures law. They kept going on how tippy they are but yet I can tip my kids wagon in my driveway should that be banned. It's all driver error and thats it.

Hey Brad its Melissa I watched it also and I was so mad because they talked about all of the negatives and the no helmet laws in Alberta well what about the rest of Canada. It was all one sided. For Paul and me it is just common sense to wear a helmet and we would never ever let Maddyson on a atv without one. I know that in the US a lot of the states don't have the helmet laws either and I just don't agree with that. Maddyson was in a bad accident last year on the atv but that didn't stop her or us from letting her get back on one. I could get in my car and go down the street and get in an accident and get killed. I agree with Brad its driver error, not the atv. Sorry about going on its just that that segment on W5 really pissed me off.

Saw the W5 show and total BS and one sided. As a bike rider when I get into the US - yes, I take my helmet off and ride and I'm fully aware of the consequences but it's my choice and it's legal in those States. Riding my ATV I'm also aware of the scenarios that present itself as do we all and sometime we get hurt when crashes happen, sometimes not - but there are so many more positive things that could have been said to promote the sport and safe riding that they did not say. One would have to be pretty stupid to think that the Mfg's don't test their machines (all types incl. bikes) to see the limits. I did some test riding and what we do and others who do testing can do on machines hardly ever gets replicated on the street or in the dirt. I liked the guy riding with the cigarette in his mouth, no helmet and doing a sharp turn into the camera before tipping - doesn't he know about the non-smoking laws?

that is the most one sided report i have ever seen. All they talked about were people doing stupid stuff getting hurt. It's pretty well only about people who aren't trained

Common sense. There are no bad atv's just bad owners.I see in the next couple of years not being able to teach my daughters how to ride a mini bike in my own yard just because of stupid people and a stupid government. With out having at least $2000 in paper work what an F N joke.I own an atv and have registerd it and have insurance. The government is a joke and is just looking for a money grab what a joke they keep it up and I'll take the plates off the bike and insurance. The news is pro government they always show the bad stuff and make it look like the goverment is doing a good thing. When it comes to news it's all bad that's the only thing to talk about.
