i run my ranger in central tx. pretty rocky, lots of cactus, occasional mud. i want something that will hold up well and not wear down fast on the rocks but will still perform in mud. which one of these two would suit me better? is there a better option? thanks

bighorns will wear much better and be less prone to damage from the rocks and cacti. They will do ok in mud, sorta. The problem is they don't clean out at all, so if you get into thick mud they turn into slicks. The swamplites will do better in the mud but aren't nearly as good in other terrain. Have you looked at the zillas? I'm not sure how they fare in rocky conditions or how they wear, but maybe someone else can help on that.

jackh, have you considered 27" Bi/Tri's?

Out of the choices I'd have to say the horns. Nothing will beat them on durbility and wear and will as said above hold up best against rock and cacti

whats that?

i have read something about essex tires. treat pattern is based off 589's but they have kevlar in them and are supposed to hold up excellent in rough terrain. seems like a good tire imo. honestly, i really dont see that much mud but when i do, i hate when my tires turn into slicks and i get stuck... i also dont really want to have a set of mud tires and a set of trail tires that i change out.

Here's a link for the B/T's--bottom 2 tires: http://www.mudtires.com/mt_cat1j.html

Jack,
I have a set of 28 Bighorns on my X2. I've been very happy with thier preformance. Trust me I've put them through all sorts of crap, but in the US and Canada. I would buy them again in a minute!!!

i think bighorns are the tire for me. i just dont know what size.

ive heard it would be better on your parts to go with just a slightly bigger tire and a winch instead of lift and tires and no winch. is this true?

Here's what I have on my X2 500...RDC 2" lift (most important!!!), 28" Maxxis Bighorns(love 'em), 2500 Viper max winch with Synthetic cable. ALl of these are a must!!! I'd do it in that order. And, until you get a winch...always ride with a buddy who has one!!! LOL

The horns seem to come slightly bigger than the rated size. Which is good. I would go with the 27's and if I had it to do over that's what I would have is the 27's. I got the 25's for another quad, that wasn't gonna be in mud too much. So I wasn't gonna need the clearance of the bigger tires. The 25's are closer to 26's and 27's closer to 28's true height. Bit the wider the rim the shorter your tire will be.

I ended up getting two sets of stock steel rims one for my 589's and one for the horns. Don't take long with the craftsman electric impact to change out.

I'd go with the Horns....and as Tmonster said above they run true to size and slightly bigger.
Zillas are a great "all around" trail/mud tire but for rocks and cacti......the zillas may be a little soft..

i think its stock with 25s. how big can i go without a lift? what about with a 2" lift but no forward a arms?

We put 28 swamplights under a ranger...they are a little close on the front but they went.

I'd probably do 27 horns..with the 2"
