View Full Version : We need a cover for the radiator cap!!

Hey Paul...
As many of us have moved the radiator up to the rack,I think there is a demand for a billet radiator cap,or a cover for the existing one.
How hard would this be?
Is it even a possibility?
Or...should I just hit the auto parts stores looking for a universal radiator cap cover and try to make it work?

Maybe even this whole piece with a cap, but i'm sure that wouldn't be easy.

Never really paid much attention, are they just a standard rad cap? If so, this would work (depending on the pressure)

If this will help... Here's the one I used (import) vs. OEM (full size). Seemed to fit the radiator better...

Best idea I've see for a rad cap. Built in temp gauge.

http://www.summitracing.com/search/brand/Mr-Gasket/Product-Line/Mr-Gasket-Thermocap-Radiator-Caps/?autoview=SKU&gnview=vertical

Not sure about the fitment though. I did see these at Royal Distributing before but never looked at them in person.

Hey maybe someone can try a Polaris cap on a few different car makes to see if we can match one up.
Just an idea

Well..I think our Polaris has a 13 psi cap. That thermocap comes in 7 different 13 psi part #'s.
Anyone want to invest $175($25/each) and see if one of them will work?lol.

Wow, that cap with the temp gauge is awesome. I'll be buying one of those...once we figure out which part # we need. LOL

OK I almost forgot about it but the cap off of my 07' Sportsman fit the first truck I tried it on... a 97' Chevy S-10. So it looks like we have the most common rad cap on the market. I haven't checked the part numbers from Mr. Gasket but Chevy used the same rad cap from the early 60s until just recently on almost everything they built so that should make it pretty easy to come up with the correct one to fit the quads.

I just looked at the link Rob put up and it looks like the only difference in the parts is color and pressure. My factory cap doesn't say the pressure but I would say that David is about right with 13 psi so it looks like you just need to pick a color for one of the 13 psi units and you'll be good to go. It takes me 10 minutes to get past the snorks to get to my rad cap so I don't care what it looks like lol, someone else is gonna have to guini pig here but I'm confident that these caps will fit just fine.

Ok...for the sake of simplicity lets just go with silver.
Mr. Gasket has 2 different model #s for the 13psi cap.
2470S and 2472S.
In the descriptions it says that the 2472S is "Designed for import models".
That being said...I'd bet that the 2470S is the model we need.

Yes your right David, I guess I read the descriptions a little too fast. An import or Asian cap is very small compared to a standard Chevy cap.

well guys i guess i will be the guinnee pig for this one. I really like the idea expecially when you relocate the rad. not only for looks but functionality. so i went down to my local canadian tire and to my surprise they had one on the shelf (2470S). So for 50 bucks i bought it. its easy enough for me to return it if it doesn't fit. and if it does well then i can use it when i relocate my radiator. i will take it to work with me tomorrow and try it on the 09 800 we have there. i will report my findings tomorrow when i find out.

Awesome.Let us know.I've found several places online I can get one for less that $25 US.

OnlyPolaris
01-30-2010, 06:50 PM
well it doesn't fit. the cap it self fits the fill neck perfect. i don't know how to explain this but the lip that holds the cap on is to thick which won't allow the cap to screw on.

800Stealth
01-30-2010, 06:55 PM
Did you try bending the locking tabs on the cap down a little bit to allow for the thicker rad flange. I have to tweak caps all the time at work to get the right tension, I've found that they are usually manufactured with a pretty big "acceptable tolerence" lol.

OnlyPolaris
01-30-2010, 07:28 PM
i thought of that but didn't know if bending them would cause the cap to not tighten enough. glad you understood what i was talking about. i guess i could try bending them. cause its not that much. i guess i will try that on monday.

800Stealth
01-31-2010, 08:51 AM
Just bend them a little bit at a time and it will be fine, if you bend them too far just bend them back until the tension feels about right. If you look closely you might even find that its just one of the tabs thats too tight and the other will clear. should be a simple fix either way.

I'll get ya the autometer gauge # i used. Its the exact same one as the quadovator kit comes with. Think i paid $28 for it. I don't think theres anything special that the quadovator kit comes with. All you have to do is drill & tap the thermostat housing and mount the gauge.

Good to know.Thanks.
Now I just need to decide if I want to go that route...or just a billet cap and a pod mounted temp gauge.
Nice to know I have a choice.
Also nice to know that just about any 13psi billet cap for a domestic application can be made to fit.
