OK guys,
Here's my problem. I just ordered and received a new set of tires and rims for my '06 500 X2. I hade the original 489's with steel rims on it. I picked up a set of 27" Bighorns with Vision 160 rims for a smokin deal.
I was planning on putting them on tonight. I pulled the first wheel off and slapped the new one on. That's when I noticed that the lug studs seemd a little short. I also noticed that my stock lug nuts won't work either. Since I have steel rims my lugs are flat with a washer attached.
The new vision rims have a taper to each lug hole. I'm guessing that I just need to pick up some tapered nuts and I should be ok. I guess I'm worried that the studs aren't going to be long enough to let the nuts get a real good bite.
The company where I bought these from said that these rims would fit my machine. They did not include new nuts. I have sent them an email to find out what to do.
Any ideas or suggestions would be great. I really like these tires and rims. I hope I can make them work out.

If that company doesn't get you set up let me know. I have the lugs in stock. 1.00 each and if you need longer studs they are about 20.00 for the set of 16.

You can go to your local polaris dealer and tell them you want 16 of the longer wheel studs, they are about 3/8" longer than the studs you currently have and are for any newer model sportsman with stock aluminum rims. Heres the funny part, they are all the same part # if I'm not mistaken, so you need to specify that its for perferably a newer 800 with aluminum factory wheels. I have ordered them a few times for making wheel spacers and I pretty much have to have them pull them all out and point out the difference to them myself LOL.

the long studs are definately a different part number than the short studs. The long ones are yellow, the short ones a silver colored.
Long ones are 7518378
Short ones are 7515513

Thanks for all of the info guys!!
Big Dog, I did hear back from the guy and he shipped the lugs and center caps seprate so they didn't get lost.
I'm thinking that I do need the longer studs. Now here's the next question. How do you remove the existing studs. They don't have a hex head??? Do they just screw out???
I've only ever run stock tires and rims, so this is a whole new world to me.

they have to be pushed out. I've never taken them out but I'm sure if you put a nut on the end and tap them out, once the straight knurl is clear od the hub, it will be loose, then you can remove the nut and pull them out from the back side.
Thats what I would do.
Or put a large diameter socket over the back side and press them out with a c-clamp???

I just used a brass punch to take mine out but hitting on the nut will also work. Mine came out real easy.

If you don't need the old studs, just take a hammer and pound them out. They really aren't in there that hard. A couple sharp raps on the end of one should push it through.
The negative part is you will have to remove the brake disc to put the new ones in. You don't really have to remove the hub, here's the steps:
1. remove wheel
2. remove caliper
3. loosen bolts holding on brake discs. you don't have to fully remove them, though it might be easier in the long run.
4. pound the old ones out with some method.
5. put the new one through from the back.
6. using the nut you had on the steel rims, put a flat washer on and then put the steel lug nut on and tighten it down. As you tighten it down it will pull the stud in like you were pressing it from the back.
That's it.

PS don't use an impact to snug them in. The hub is a soft cast and can be stripped out,

Hey guys,
Thanks for all of the help and input!!! The guy from walkerSupplyATV got back to me this morning. He had shipped the lugs and center caps seperately. However, Just in case I ordered some longer lug studs from the local dealer.
I guess I'll have an extra set of studs now. I was able to mount the tires/rims tonight. Boy do they look sweet!!!
I measured from the ground up to my custom rear bumper/hitch with the stockers on. I had 15 1/4" of clearence. Of course that's with a RD 2" lift front & rear.
Now with the new 27" Big horns I have 17 1/2"!!!! I still need to drop the tire pressure down from shipment. But I think I'll still have plenty of room to clear stumps and rocks!! Hell, I might not even need waders!!! LOL.

Hey Paul,
Let me get some seat time in and I'll be sure to snap a few picts. BTW, If I didn't have your 2" lift on already I think I'd be rubbing. Now it's free and clear!!!!

If you get the aftermarket vision rims they are designed to work with the shorter studs, though to be honest I'm not sure I trust it either. I agree with your plan to put new studs in. The extra couple of hours to put the new studs in is well worth it.
When you put the brake discs back on, be sure to put some loctite on the bolts.

Thought I would pipe in here. I installed the longer studs on my 01 and didn't need to remove the disks. Just enough room to get em' in. 5 minute job at best. Put the old nuts on enough to cover the threads and tap out with a hammer. Insert new ones and draw in with an air ratchet. Install wheels and get out there LOL.

Just an update. I finally put on the longer 800 studs this past weekend. I did have to slightly loosen the bolts on the front brake disc. However, I did not have to on the rear ones. there was enough room to just slide the longer studs in. I feel more confident now with the longer studs. It's mud season you know!!!;)
