If our dollar holds on par or above the US do you all think its worth the extra trouble to go to the US & buy a bike for $2000+ less than i can here in Ontario.

theres the one tax, you have to make sure any recals have been done, and theres some bullshit fee thats between 200 and 300 dollars. Still well worth it when you consider that a new machine in the U.S. is priced about $3500 less than the same machine here in Canada.
As for everything I posted above, I have never done it but its everything I have heard from the dealer over there, and from someone that bought a RZR over there. Your best bet is to ask Shawna (Gecko) shes a pro with this stuff if I'm not mistaken.

Im just so pissed at my 600 for sitting busted for the last 4 months in the dealers shop & all he wants to do is throw parts at it until he finds the problem. I have already spent $2500 on busted parts so far & with another $1000 for it not to run is just too much
So if i get a new job early in the new year i might just take my severance pay & pick up an X2 to replace my 600.

My wife said she heard that they were stopping Canadians at the border & making them leave their new bikes that they bought in the US. I know many of the dealers have been told to not sell to Canadians & if they do they will get a fine.
Anyone know any more on this subject?

If you take $1000 off the price for being used you have a deal.:eyebrows:
Seriously that might actually be a good way to get around the border BS if it really is that much of a problem.

Can I use it for a week at Mud Nats.
That what I was getting at. I think the rules change if it used.

AS long as it comes with a FREE BIG LIFT i would be happy to pay the full price on your used bike. How much damage could you do to a bike in one week???:jaw::rip::first:

Unless you have seen mud nats first hand, you have NO IDEA buddy. We helped pull 2 guys out on our first day there, long before it was packed and one of them had a cracked motor case, the other 2 broke axles LOL. It's not a nice place for quads if you are into punding the shit out of them LOL, and I feel Vern would be the guy to bring it to your doorstep in small boxes :D

Here are some steps I saved off a Forum a little while back but can't remember which one.
US Purchase
Step 1. Find a dealer that you want to purchase the quad from. (Look for the best price online, but ensure that your shipper goes to that state before you buy)
Step 2. Make sure he knows you are a Canadian citizen. I didn't hide anything from them so that I wouldn't have problems later.
Step 3. Provide him with a US Drivers License so that they can make out the warranty to a US Citizen. ( I used a buddies from Ohio) YOU WILL NOT HAVE
WARRANTY in Canada. (US and Canada Yamaha don't honour each other's warranty)
Step 4. Pay for the ATV.
Step 5. Contact Erum Malik, C.C.S. at FEDEX She is a broker. She will ensure all of the paperwork is at the proper border crossing for the arrival of the vehicle. She will send you some
forms that you will have to fill out and fax back to her. (Bill of sale, exporter's name and address, your name and address and SIN# etc...)

Step 6. Contact a shipping company. You could use Purolator, FedEX, or any other company. ( I used PRO-North Transport 1-800-265-9370 Ext 2234 ask for Dave.
Step 7. Pay your broker ($150) ,GST, Shipper ($590 from New York to Sudbury Ontario, and $205 new vehicle inspection fee. (which goes to Canadian Tire)
Step 8. You will have to take your ATV to a Canadian Tire store for inspection to ensure it is a new, safe vehicle.
Step 9. Take the documents to a local issuing office to be issued ownership information so that you can buy insurance.
Step 10. Call the insurance company and give them the information.

You need to be ready, I think using a broker would be the best! You also need to notify the border 72 hrs ahead of time, I think the broker would handle most of this. Also, there are 2 certifications that need to be done the Canadian Tire can handle (I lost what the paper work is). I had a buddy price a '07 800 in Colorado - $6680.00. Also look into paying no tax in the U.S. as the bike is for export. The dealer in Colorado would allow you to do that if you guaranteed the bike was out of the state in 30 days.

I was reading through the thread. You do need to notify the border ahead of time (there is a specific time frame) and have all the correct paper work. Without this you are SOL. Also, lots of trucking companies come back from the US empty. Should be able to swing some sort of cheap shipping rate. Phone around to find out, get a good broker and you should be good to go.

Well its an IF i get a bike not a when. I have no idea when i would be getting a new bike but if things go VERY good it could be in early summer.
Right now it about a 90/10 split that i get my 600 fixed & keep it or sell it off & get an 800 in the US.

Riven,
If you need somebody closer to buy you and X2 I have a dealer that's just over the border in PA. I've been dealing with him for a few years. Plus. I'm only 2 1/2 hours from Buffalo or 3 1/2 from Watertown on 81. I might be your best bet when the time comes!!!

Hey Jay, I asked the sales guy again tonight, he said its no problem selling you a machine and no need for a U.S. license either. Just whatever taxes at the border and fees to have it cleared or whatever it is...
BTW, this place is called Bob Weaver Motorsports and they are about 10 minutes from the Niagara Falls border

Thanks x2rider & thanks Paul! I checked out their site earlier today. $8600 for an 08 800 sounds good to me. Sure beats $11700 at home & THATS WITH no OPTIONS.

Happy Holidays.........jsut got back and didn't read all the posts but YES - well worth it, I did it 3 yrs ago when the dollar was at 17% and save over $2000, BUT there are regulations and compliance issues.
NO - you never use Purpolator, Fed Ex or any other "courier" company to move large pieces internationally - the cost will kill you. Customs will not make you leave the item at the border if you have done things correctly - ah! the DIY's always seem to forget a thing or two which is why you read posts that are negative, complex, or problematic - there are a million posts on the subject on all different forums - and if you want to DIY - you need to follow the rules - there are NO shortcuts, no hiding things, etc....do it right and you will save $$$$.
That being said, I'm not about to type all the "stuff" you need to do, but if anyone is serious and wants to use my company then I'll be glad to work with you - this is my business as a Freight Forwarder and I can be reached at geckos@sympatico.ca
