It is there for us guys that live in the freeze zones.

ok then i better not change it. what is the point of changing it anyway?

Regardless of where I live I would assume the hose on my machine has the slit to??

This hose is slit in case a line freezes, it is able to release the pressure.

But for people that live in the south we dont have to worry about anything freezing, and those hoses allow water into the airbox if you are deep enouggh for long enough. THat is why people replace them

I've heard about water getting in through the slit before.I may consider replacing mine for down here & putting the stock one with the slit away in case it's ever needed to be switched back.

i see. well i have been planty deep before and have never got water in the air box. so i don't think it will be a problem.

just look where the rubber hose comes into the airbox right next to the intake going to the carb/efi.

its a 3/4" hose with a silver thermal wrap around it. if you see a dirty spot where it looks like something has been draining out of the hose into the airbox, you better change it. but then again i never saw it on my blue one because the slit was on the downhill side going to the motor, not the airbox. all the water coming in was going directly to the motor.

and i cant see why the reason the slit is there to keep it from freezing.... thats a little stupid. if you have that much water in that hose for it to freeze, you got a hell of a lot more problems than a busted 1.50 hose.......

that hose is for nothing else but to allow the crankcase to equalize pressure and release anything thats built up into the airbox to keep from blowing out seals. but if you got that much pressure in your crankcase, you got bad rings or a cracked piston anyway.

It can also drain directly into the crankcase.
The idea behind the slit is that one some bikes, water would build up in the crankcase ventline, it would freeze, and then all the pressure from the crankcase would build up and something else would break. To fix this, they added the slit in the hose close to the crankcase (or oiltank on the 500's) end of the hose. This way, even if it does freeze up it won't close off. The disadvantage is that it will let water in if you get that deep. There's also a good chance that the water could run directly into your crankcase rather than into your airbox, so just because you don't see water in your airbox doesn't mean you aren't getting water in your oil.

i will change it then. i dont ride in the winter to often. if i look in my air box it looks like something is running into it. how many hoses have the slit in them? there is one that connects to the top of the oil tank. is that the same one as the crankcase.

I'd like to know that also.Besides the oil tank line.I know on my SP 500 I have a hose that runs from my airbox to the engine, there is a little white filter in the middle of this hose.I assume it's for crankcase ventilation, does this hose also have a slit in it??

On the 500, it's the one that runs to the top of the oil tank.

can anybody tell me the size of this line. i know it is 115cm long. i want to go buy some hose but dont want to run across town to look at my bike then all the way back across town to buy the hose. if i had to guess i would say it is 3/8 I.D.
