350 ES Won't Shift

I'm posting this for my buddy that I had to tow out of the bush yesterday. His Fourtrax 350 ES (2001) seemed to get stuck between gears when he went to shift. We tried the manual foot shifter, but no luck. The gear indicator says he is in third gear. When he tried to give it gas it made a whirring noise. After he shut it off we could not start it again. Any thoughts on how to diagnose the problem?

Not sure why it won't change...but the reason it wouldn't start again is because it's designed to not start in gear.
You should be able to bypass that by pulling in the front brake when you try to start it.
