anyone have a year or model or part # for the ford starter solinoid for the polaris sportsman 500.
I rebilt the starter and bench tested it and it worked fine, but when I put it in, it didnt do anything, I took my solinoid out (breaking it in the process) and put the wifes in and bingo bango, it turns over. Now I need a new solinoid for her's today if possible but I need a part #?????
Thanks.

Don't have the Ferd p/n handy but I have had no problems using the solenoids from a lawn tractor....just be sure it's a single trigger ie: 1 small terminal.
The ones I get are for twin cyl tractors...20 hp and up....they seem to be close in both inrush and holding current....besides being quite a bit less $$$$
Hope this is of some help!

I just talked to my polaris shop and they are holding one for me until Wednesday. $31 ait that bad, but please get me the alternate part #'s and I will get a spare and try it out. I went to Canadian Tire today and the girl (I think it was a chic) got out a ford solinoid, very similar but it had 2 small posts instead of one, and although it said to just not use a certain one if itsa not needed, the main posts were not marked and they were much larger in diameter, I wasnt sure if the little wire would have fit it. Not to mention, what happens if I pit the wires on the wrong posts????

there is 2 different types of ford solionoids. there is a round one and a flat one.

this was a pretty bulky roundish one, it had a post coming out each side, straight out, and 2 little posts near the end of it. Had the same mounting plate as the polaris one though....

Think of a solenoid as a contactor--bi-metal spring loaded plate that sends current from one post to the next and then to the electrical device.
The small post is only the 12v low amp draw trigger that sends current to the coil that energises the plate that makes the bridge between posts.
Biggest price diff in solenoids is the type of alloy used in the contacts and the bakelite hsg.
I'm a diesel gearhead and heavy duty contactors/relays/solenoids are crutial to starting a diesel ie: the glow plugs/starting aid.

Thanks Streamline, it was the ff143a that they were going to sell me, but the posts are a lot larger in diameter and I wasnt sure if the eye on the small wire would have fit onto it, also, I wouldnt know what happens if I wire it backwards?????

Paul, both of those solenoids will work. The big poles can be hooked up either way. That doesn't matter, but the little wire goes to the S pole for START. The I pole is for IGNITION. I work at a Ford dealer so I hope you believe me LOL

Cool, I only need 1 of the little poles though, and I'm pretty sure it had instructions on the little poles if you only need one, and what one to use.

Ya don't worry about the I pole. Just hook up the S pole and you'll be cranking

hmmmm might just have to go and get one tomorrow at crappy tire and see how it goes, then either keep the polaris one for a backup or return it?????

Depends on the price I guess. For the $30 for the PoPo one, that's almost a case of barley pops in my eyes :)
