I'm losing places to ride left and right, so I am looking into joining my local ATV club to have some trails to run. I only go riding with my boys, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how old kids have to be to be able to run the trails. Also, can you ride 2-up?

Thanks

your ATV has to be plated and registered, and you must wear a helmet. Though not mandatory, the OFATV recommends that you wear long sleeves and pant legs, gloves, eye goggles, and sturdy footwear. For maximum protection, ATV specific safety gear can be purchased.

ATVs must have the appropriate equipment (e.g.: head lights, tail lights, working brakes and brake lights, reflectors, low-pressure bearing tires)

Width and weight restrictions appropriate to type of vehicle

You must be twelve years of age or older to ride an ATV alone in Ontario, though adult supervision is always recommended.

The manufacturers recommend that most ATV's be ridden by one person only, with no passengers. The reason for this is that an ATV handles differently, has different weight distribution, and a different centre of gravity when a passenger is riding behind the driver. There is also a possibility of the passenger interfering with the driver. The only exception to their recommendation is machines which are designed to accommodate more than one person. They are still not allowed on any roadways, see reference in bill 11 section.

But the manufacturers produce seats that attach to the back rack of my ATV, can I ride double if I have one of these?

These seats are not made by the manufacturers of ATV's, but are instead produced by after-market vendors. There is the strong manufacturer recommendation that an ATV designated for a single person is used by a single person.

Both from OFATV site http://www.ofatv.org/team-ofatv/faq

Theres a lot of good riding here and you don't have to join a club.

I went riding yesterday between the Allanburg bridge and the tunnel on hwy 58 along the Welland canal, had a blast out there, it's a good mix of mud and trails. Spent about 4 hours riding and only got through probablly half of the trails. You guys should check it out if you haven't already.

I understood it to mean that he can ride on his bike as long as you are around

most clubs allow 2 ups and several clubs allow sxs now.
As long as kids are responsible and supervised not many clubs are gonna care tbh.

Just coz OFATV has many rules...don`t mean all are adhered too..LOL

You can ride 2-up on any trail, it's only highway access (includine crossing) that is restricted. Most places in Southern Ontario do not allow SxS's though.

As a note, most clubs soft warden their trails which means they only educate and warn. The issues will be OPP or MNR when it comes to the kids. Usually it's 12 (supervised) and up for the kids. HATVA likes it this way but some don't care. It should be on the websites. The Ganaraska Forest in Durham is one of the few places that has no age restrictions.

If you guys ever want to do a 5-points run (Bobcaygeon), just let me know. I know it's a heck of a drive for most of you but I have a half acres lot and there is a lot of space for camping out. I just need a month or so notice as my weekends are pretty full.

I think I saw that once, then went back and it disappeared. Couldn't remember who sent it. Sorry. Anyways, the offer is open now. I'm not a big mud guy, but I do know the area enough not to get lost.

You can ride from my house to the Ganny,,, not quite legal but oh well. Maybe 10 minutes. My dad's tobacco farm used to back right up to the Ganny. Been riding\driving in there for 30 years. Not much mud though.

My area is covered by KATVA (Kawartha ATV) and HATVA (Haliburton ATV). We have reciprocal agreements between both. From what I have read, we are close to a one pass.

Ganny is separate,,,, 20 bucks a day, or 100 bucks for the year.

Hey, English, are your trails open 12 months?

I've been trying to keep up to date on the whole pass deal thing. Usually ends up in a post war or bashing of some kind. Not interested in the arguments lol. It would be nice to have just 1...We just get a day pass when needed.

we are stuck in an aggrement on our main trails with the snowmobile club that we have to close during dec jan feb and march...but we are working on 2 trails that will be either open yr round or strictly winter riding.

We also in talks to change that arrangment as only 3 sleds were on the trails on my propertys last yr and they were 3 stolen ones that we recovered. So i want to try and keep them yr round. Biggest problem is the damage they take in really wet times in spring and fall...it's all private land so it has to be maintained. We have a fleet of trailer/tractor and equipment that we use for hauling in stone etc so you can see why its not free to ride..LOL

most of the OFATV clubs are closed over winter...Haliburton is open yr round i belive?

sooner they get this one pass the better.

Only the Haliburton Forest is open year round. HATVA members only, and you have to book in advance as there are a limited number of spots.

PLEASE beware of where U buy your pass Haliburton is it's own trail system, as well as the Kawartha and lindsay. Their sites claim to be the ONLY legal sites. That don't recognize the gold pass. We have also lost the Quebec traila do to poor Increases in their ridership. Personally greed is the whole problem

when i cam sit here longer, it's really gunna hit the fan. thanks guys

Rules, rules and more rules. This is the reason I will never join any of our local clubs. It's just stupid the way they want you to ride and the hoops you have to jump through. You can't have any alcohol, you can't have too agressive of a tire, your bike can't be too loud and they only ride so fast. it goes on and on.

choPppps

Even without a pass the rules are the same though. At least in my area KATVA is doing something. We have quite a bit of road access in the northern part of CoKL. HATVA also has all kinds of road access now. All due to the clubs fighting for us. A one pass for Ontario would be the best thing for us because then there will be someone protecting our right to ride. In my area, there are no tire restrictions, and none that I konw of for EOTA.
