First and foremost, WELCOME to the site.
Secondly, is this the same on other machines as I have an 04.5 500 and an 04.5 400???
What about other years???
Did Polaris do anything to help cover the cost of repair?

Damn i hit a rock the other day, gonna have to look into this now, thx man, will catch ya up when I look at it and see if it is damaged, all i did was run over a rock in some stream and felt the rock run along the bottom of the skid plate.
Thx for the heads up

hmmmm,...i am due for an oil change, I just cant remember where the plug was until I get at it....wait, its on the bottom of the oil resivour right??? ya thats where I rememeber it.
don't forget the drain plug on the engine, the sp400/500 has an engine drain plug that screws in horizontally behind the intermediate driveshaft along with the resevoir plug. I have to think whatever you hit, you hit pretty good.

it is important to remove both drain plugs on the 400/500 to get all the crap oil out..

500blue, I never have and I have changed my oil about 6 or 7 times so far. I never have done because I would hate to not get the oil pump primed properly since I dont know how to do it, and then in turn cause damage to my motor.

This is an old thread but I thought I'd add to it. I've drained the oil on my SP500 from the reservoir and the engine. You really should to get all the oil out. I haven't had a problem with priming and if there was going to be a problem Polaris wouldn't be telling you to do it in the manual.
Try it and when you start the engine just wait for the oil light to go out. Mine took a few seconds but that was it. I think its better to change all the oil and not leave a pint or so of the old stuff in the engine.

IM not sure if its the same on yours but on my 06 500 when you prime it and unclamp the hose it will make a rushing sound if done right like air sucking in. so its kinda fool proof. dont be afraid i was the first time i did it to.

If your worried that it will take to long to prime just pull the coil wire off and then you can crank the motor over until it builds oil preasure with out it firing up. What makes the 500 special that it may not prime? is the oil pump pick up not submerged in oil? I've been a mechanic for 13 years and never seen an engine design that would have that problem. all gearator style fluid pumps are self priming. I don't get it.
