So my new 30 gallon compressor was trippin out the 15 amp breaker as some of you might have read already in another thread right. So I pick up a 20 amp breaker and have my dad come by tonight to show me how to swap out the 15 and put in the 20 and see if that works, I'm an electrical moron as you may have already figured out.

So he comes over and we go out and I show him the new beast. He says to me "Have you tried it without the extension cord" My reply "I was gonna but I didnt really think it would make a difference". Now the extension cord is a regular old 50 footer for the outdoors type use right, and the power cord on this sum bitch is at least twice as thick as the extension cord. So I wheel it over to the front of the garage (I wanted it at the back but I got no plugs there, thus the extension cord) and I plug it in and turn it on..... Yup it works perfect, even with the lights all on and the drill press on etc etc....
:doh::frusty::faint::behindsofa:

So now I'll just hang onto that 20 amp breaker in case I need it down the road I guess...

yeah, air compressors pull a crapload of power. If you need the compressor back there, I recommend running a 10Ga wire and putting a new plug there.

or you could just go ahead and put in the 20 amp breaker.

Paul, whatever you do, please don't install the 20 amp breaker instead of the 15 amp one if you have 14 gauge house wire. Then, your extension cord could overheat and catch on fire. You should be ok by using a 14 or 12 gauge extension cord, but please, leave the 15 amp breaker in place.

Watch those extension cords!

Big shop type compressors will die fast on long/undersize cords....best hard wired on a dedicated double pole 220 circut. Most newer ones are switchable between 110/220 and at 220 they draw less amps and that equals longer motor life!

I'm going to have to agree 100 percent on that. If you change that breaker to a 20 then the wire should be 12AWG....Useing a longer air hose is a better choice IMO

Okay, thanks guys, no 20 amp breaker this time around and I'll probably put an outlet in the garage where I want it to stay, either that or hard wire it and forget about it.
