View Full Version : Battery dead?

Ok so I went out to garage a few hours ago to finish cleaning up the bike and turned the key over and there was nothing happening. It's only been sitting a few days without being started, and it's in a heated garage.
Put the jumper cables on it from my truck, and it took all of 15 mins to get it finally to turn over.
Let it run for about 10 mins (with cables detached of course) and was going through the yellow button controls trying to figure out how to reset the clock on the pod when I hit the out button on the winch controller just to see how much draw I had . Instant kill on the engine, and wouldn't crank back over.
Got a bunch of displays on the pod, including wait, battery flashes, and some numbers, so I shut it down and reconnected the jumper cables to my truck.
Only took about 1 minute for it to crank back over, and I let it run for about 30 mins this time while cleaning stuff up. I hit the throttle a few times, and the light on the pod went dim while I was doing this.
Shut it off and when I turned the key over again it just clicked with no cranking.
So...what went wrong out there just within a few days of sitting still?

toward the middle of it i was going to say disconect your battery to try reset things. man alot of people have bad luck with battery's. i have had no trouble out of mine for 2 years and it sits out in the cold all winter.

So you don't think it's a battery issue happening?

If a cell was low it could have froze.

I'd put a charger on it overnight, then see if it holds the charge. It sounds like the battery is so dead that your generator is having a hard time pushing a charge into it. If there's a chance that it froze you're going to need a new battery.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Never got back in here last nite, so I missed the suggestion about the charger,
so I put one on it before coming to work this morning.
But before doing it I turned the key over and there was nuttin, nada, zilch happening.
i have had no trouble out of mine for 2 years
So far so good with mine but we dont have the cold freezing winters you guys have.

Get a tender for it. Did you inspect the terminals?? There is always a chance that one is loose or corroaded.

Yeah I really should. I think I'll pick one up tomorrow when we're out shopping.
And yes, terminals are clean and tight.
I have a battery tender it comes in handy for the riding mower and the atv.I think I paid $29.00 for mine, they had a cheaper one for $19.00.So far I have not had to use the tender on the atv battery.

I don't know why I never thought of getting one before. I think I'll be making a stop at O'Riellys on the way home from work today for one.

I woke up late and in my rush to get to work before lunch I forgot the tester. I'm guessing you don't have one?

Actually, the easiest way to test a battery is to take it out of the bike and take it to any auto parts store. They have a little tester that will tell you in about 30 seconds if the battery is good or not.

No I don't think I have a tester.
But since it's been on the charger all day, they could still tell if it's bad or not?

Whats the word Rebel, did the charger do the trick?
Rebel64
01-11-2008, 04:28 PM
Well I took it off the charger as soon as I got home, and it fired right up.
I'm going to take it out of the bike here shortly and run it up to O'Rielleys and have them test it.
At least I know it'll hold a charge long enough for me to get it on the trailer Saturday, and if it's bad I'll take you up on your offer for your spare one. What kind of beer do you drink? I'm not taking it for free.

Camo Is Comeing Sunday ...arnt You Camo
It's looking pretty good so far the wife keeps checkin the weather every day and last night she mentioned she wants to go get the snap on hood for her Carharts before we go. So as long as I make it thru the day with out any last minute requests from my boss I would have to say were in. The only thing is we wouldn't probably leave here til 6 am which should put us in Gailsburg by 9:30. The wife like her sleep but I'll see if I can get her moving earlier.:whip:

Well it looks like we will be arriving to Bucks place right around the same time since we're lot leaving my house until 9am after she gets back here from doin "things" back at her house.
BTW, the battery seems to be all back to normal. I ran out of time yesterday and didn't get a chance to take it an auto store to have it checked, so I just put it back in the bike.
I went out to the garage about 30 mins ago and it cranked over just fine.
Still going to buy a battery tender while we're out shopping for waders for her though.
