1000 mile review
Well I purchased my 800 Max XT-P in April of 2010 and now have just over 1000 miles on it. Thought I would post some of my opinions.
Miles: 1058
Hours: 79 hrs 20 min
Service: 10 hour service
Issues: none
Initial impressions were just plain WOW. Even my two buddies that have driven it just get off the bike with big grins on their face. For me, I am a firm believer in the Max type ATV as they are very stable and provide a ride nice. My type of terrain is anything from slow 4x4 crawling through the woods, extreme rock crawling, rough terrain type trails as in 5-Points, general trail running as in the Ganaraska Forest (mainly sand), the trails you would find all around Weslemkoon to high speed ripping (hit 71 mph on trail in Weslemkoon area). I am not much of a mud guy to be honest. Mainly just the stuff you find on the trails in HATVA\KATVA\EOTA that is maybe 6 to 10 inches deep. Almost all of these miles where done with a stock bike, only the BRP skid plate added.
Previous bikes:
‘04.5 Polaris 500
’06 Polaris 800 – 5200 km’s
Riding Single:
I ride 75% of the time single. My first thought was the bike felt a little firm. From new, it did not ride as plush as the 800 Polaris and I still think it is a little firmer than the Polaris. The ride of the Can-Am though, feels like you are more glued to the trail. It just plain tracks better than any other bike I have owned. If I let it run, it is hard to catch on the trail. I think it may be the DPS as well, as that makes this Max feel shorter than my 800 Popo. I am very happy with how it rides. It has tons of power and can go fast enough to hurt you -> LMAO. The Max can climb and crawl amazing. I have gone up steep stuff that my buddy on his 700 Grizzly had to use his winch. The longer wheel base really helps the stability in steep terrain. I also find the longer wheel base to be actually better in the mud that I experience.
Riding 2-up:
I have to say, I give the 2-upriding to the Can-Am over my buddies 800 X-2. We swapped for a while, and even my wife was surprised at the difference. This bike is smooth with some add weight. I have not driven a Polaris Touring, so I am not sure how they ride. I do know, that even with a 230 pound guy on the back, it still rocks the trails.
DPS:
I absolutely think that DPS, or any other type of power assisted steering is awesome. It makes this bike very nimble. I have no problems in tight trails and have seen regular atv’s not be able to make some areas that I went though the first time. Maybe the stability of the Max design, or maybe the DPS allows the bike to track better, but it is good. One thing I have really noticed is the fact that the DPS makes it a lot easier to back up.
Issues:
Nothing related to technical\mechanical issues with the bike. The only thing that happened was a couple of weeks ago I killed my two front stock tires at Green’s mountain. Had to drive out for 2 hours on two front flats. 4x4 low was a long haul. That goodness for DPS. I now have 26.5 Pitbull Rockers and they are great (another review for that). Also, the plastics are not as flexible as on the Grixxly or Rincon. Smoked a small tree climbing a really steep pitch in 5-points and ended up breaking the right rear side. A little stitching with some black plastic ties and it looks almost new. Had Limp Home come up once when I was sitting in Lake Ontario for about 20 minutes, a restart cleared the message and I have not seen it since. No issues using the winch.
Gas Mileage:
I always seem to get around 5 miles per litre, or around 8 km’s per litre of fuel. Even with the new tires. With my wife, as we ride a lot calmer than single, I can get 100 miles to a tank though. Usually my Max has the best gas mileage over any other bike that I ride with.
Well that’s a little for now. So far I have been impressed and will let your know once another 1000 miles is up.
